Elizabeth Peyton

Born in Danbury, Conneticut in 1965, Elizabeth Peyton is a famous Painter based in New York. She began drawing from a young age. Born with only two fingers on her right hand, she learned to draw with her left hand (www.notablebiographies.com). Peyton studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York, where she received an BFA in 1987.
Elizabeth Peyton is known as a painter of 'modern life', painting mainly small scale portraits with oil paint, watercolour, ink or pencil. Her portraits are inspired by photographs from fashion or fan magazines or by people she knows. Peyton paints her portaits from these photographs and sometimes from life.
Peyton portrays artists and musicians of her own generation including Matthew Barney, Jake Chapman, and Angus Fairhurst, Jarvis Cocker and Liam Gallagher. She also pays tribute to iconic figures who have inspired her, including the young Elizabeth II, Georgia O’ Keefe and Frida Kahlo.

She became known in November 1993, when she and Gavin Brown (her current dealer, who back then had no gallery) sent out invitations requesting that viewers come to the Chelsea Hotel. For two weeks, people went to the desk, asked for the key to room 828, and there beheld drawings of Napoleon, Marie Antoinette, Queen Elizabeth.
Peyton is still represented by Gavin Brown Gallery and her works are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
