Susan Norrie
Susan Norrie was born in Sydney, Australia in 1953. She studied at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne and the National Art School, Sydney. She was artist in residence at the Victoria College of Arts, University of Melbourne and the University of Western Sydney, Australia. She received the Seppelt Contemporary Art Award, Sydney and Moet & Chandon Fellowship, France. She has also achieved artist in residence, (dis)location project, ZKM, Karlsruhe, Germany; APA, Scholarship for PhD studies, University of New South Wales, Sydney; Sally and Don Lucas Artist Residency Program, Montalvo, USA.
Norrie has been a practicing artist for more than twenty years across various media including painting, installation, still photography and video work.
Her works have always been informed by politics, and humanity and its relationship with the environment. From the feminist overtones of her earlier series Lavished Living,(1983-1984) and Objet D'Art (1988); to her cynical comments on consumerism found in her series' Tall Tales and True (1986-1987) and Peripherique (1989); to the more recent video works Undertow (2002) and the video work, Havoc, seen at the 2007 Venice Biennale.The project focuses on the geologically and politically volatile region of East Java , that experienced a disastrous volcanic eruption.
Norrie has had more than 30 solo shows all over the world and her work is in the collections of the Art Gallery of NSW, the Australian National Gallery and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
She resides in Sydney, Australia.
