Founded in 1701, Yale University is made up of 12 schools incuding the Yale School of Art, School of Drama, School of Music, School of Architecture and the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Yale University is the third oldest institution of higher education in the United States.
Yale was one of the first American universities to foster the arts. Visual Arts first was studied at Yale in 1832 with the opening of the Trumball Gallery, one of the earliest art museums in the anglo-saxon world and the first in the nation connected with a college (www.yale.edu). The department of Architecture was established in the Yale School of the Fine Arts in 1916. 'In 1959 the School of Art and Architecture, as it was then known, was made a fully graduate professional school. In 1972, Yale designated the School of Architecture as its own separate professional school (www.architecture.yale.edu)'.
The Yale School of Art shares a number one ranking with the Rhode Island School of Design and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for Masters of Fine Arts programs. The Yale School of Art is extremely selective with applicants, requiring an exceptional undergraduate record as well as a complete body of work for presentation. In addition to this, applicants must have an essay and recommendations from established members of the art world.
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offers programs leading to the M.A., M.S., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in over 70 departments and programs, including subjects such as Art History, Music and Film Studies.
In 1966, under the leadership of Dean Robert Brustein, Yale Repertory Theatre was formed as part of Yale School of Drama. Yale Repertory Theatre has produced well over 100 premieres, including two Pulitzer Prize winners and four other nominated finalists. Eleven Yale Rep productions have advanced to Broadway, and countless other plays first produced at Yale Rep have been presented at theatres across the country. Their productions have garnered more than 40 Tony Award® nominations and eight Tony Awards, and Yale Repertory itself is the recipient of the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre.
