Founded in 1873 the Massachusetts College of Art & Design (MassArt) was the first independant public college of art in the nation and the first school to grant a degree.

Undergraduate students at Massachusetts College of Art and Design can choose from one of eighteen different programs of study for the bachelor of fine arts degree. Graduate study at MassArt encompasses master's programs in architecture, art education, and in fine arts and design.

The college is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. MassArt is also a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD).

In 2006, MassArt was named one of the Top Global Design Schools by BusinessWeek magazine. (www.businessweek.com/magazine)

MassArt is among 75 higher education institutions featured in KIWI magazine's 2008 Green College Report, released in September 2008. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has selected 119 colleges and universities, including MassArt, for its 2008 Community Engagement Classification. Among the three categories of classification, MassArt is distinguished for its community outreach and partnerships.
