Founded as the Free Academy in 1847, the City College of New York is the oldest of the City of New Yorks University's 23 institutions of higher learning. The City College of New York offers majors and minors in art, English, languages, history, media and communication arts, music, philosophy, and theatre, as well as special programs in electronic design and multimedia, sonic arts, film and video.

Once known as the 'poor mans Harvard', the City College of New York began as a political and educational experiment opening its doors to the entire cross-section of the community.The City College of New York was the first free public college in the United States. The college boasts a diverse campus with students from over 85 different countries.
The Division of Humanities and the Arts at The City College of New York offers courses in subjects including art education, museum studies, visual arts, creative writing, media arts production (film and video) and music.
Many notable alumni came from this institution including two Rhodes Scholars and nine Nobel laureates and no other public college has produced as many Nobel laureates who have studied and graduated with a degree from a particular public institution.
