Originally known as the Normal College, the Hunter College of the City University of New York was founded in 1870 and is one of the oldest public colleges in the country. The college was originally established as a teacher-training school for young women by Irish immigrant and social reformer Thomas Hunter and became co-educational in the 1950s.
In the 1920s, an art department was established that included two disciplines: studio art and art history. The Arts are well-catered for at the Hunter College of the City University of New York with two art galleries, and performances are given at the Assembly Hall, which seats more than 2,000; the state-of-the-art Kaye Playhouse, a 675-seat proscenium theatre; the Lang Recital Hall (149 seats), used for individual recitals, film festivals, and jazz and chamber-music concerts; and the Frederick Loewe Theatre. All of the performance spaces have been newly designed or updated and refurbished within the last 10 years.
The 2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges", published by U.S. News & World Report, places Hunter 12th among public universities in the north in the "Best Universities-Master's" category, and among the 574 public and private institutions in this category, Hunter is in the first tier with a rank of 51.
