The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture claims to provide 'an alternative to prevailing trends in American art schools' (www.nyss.org). It is a school based on the maxim: “Ambition for the work, not ambition for the career". As well as the indepth study of Sculpture, Painting and Drawing, the school also focuses on the subject of Art History.

The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture came about as a reaction to the proliferation of degree granting art colleges across the States in the 1950/60s. Not happy with the pace & style of these programs, a school was established by a group of students with Writer/Artist Mercedes Matter. Through a lot of fundraising, the school opened in 1964 and since then has maintained its original committment to an atelier-based curriculum. There is no focus on commercial applications to art or any liberal arts course requirements. The only course focus is on the subjects of Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and Art History.
