The Sarah Lawrence College was established by William Van Duzer Lawrence in 1926 in honor of his wife, Sarah. It was originally intended to instruct women in the field of arts and humanities and became co-educational in 1968. Sarah Lawrence offers a Bachelor of Arts degree where, instead of traditional majors, students pursue a wide variety of courses in four different curricular distributions: the Creative Arts; History & Social Sciences; the Humanities; Natural Science and Mathematics.
The College employs a teaching method based on the Oxford/Cambridge system of seminars and tutorials. Most of the student's work involves studying in this format, with strong emphasis placed upon the student's responsibility for their own performance. Each student is assigned a "don" (an academic and personal advisor) to plan a course of study and provide ongoing guidance. Writing is considered as a tool for thinking and therefore intensive writing programs are employed across all curriculums.
In June of 2007, The Middle States Commission on Higher Education completed its decennial review of Sarah Lawrence College’s accreditation status and in their report observed 'Sarah Lawrence College is an institution of rare quality which expresses extraordinary dedication to a clear, distinctive and compelling educational mission' (www.slc.edu/about/accreditation).
