Australian Artist, Margaret Olley said to journalist, Ross Fitzgerald; "It is essential that the National Art School remain independent. It must not be attached to a university. You do not need a degree to be a sculptor or painter (The Australian, Nov 27, 2006)."
Amidst much controversy and debate, the National Art School has managed to remain an independant art school.
The National Art School focuses on synergy of three key subjects: drawing, art history and theory, and a studio major. The studio teaching focuses on a close interaction between practising artist-teachers and students, inspired by a philosophy of "thinking through making".
The National Art School also offers a range of non-award courses in all studio disciplines through their Public Programs division including an evening and weekend Short Course program, Winter and Summer School programs.
The School also offers a range of non-award enhancement courses for HSC students that include the HSC Studio Intensive program and the Dobell School for Drawing.
