Victorian College of the Arts had its origins in the National Gallery School, which was founded in 1867. In 1992 it was merged with the Prahran Faculty of Art (Victoria College) which also dates back to the mid-nineteenth century.
On January 1 2007 the VCA became a faculty of The University of Melbourne.
Located on a 4-hectare site in the heart of Melbourne's Arts Precinct, the Victorian College of the Arts comprises 6 different academic areas: Art, Dance, Drama, Music, Film & Television, Production and two centres; The Centre for Ideas, and The Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts & Cultural Development.
VCA has produced artists of national and international standing; including successful filmmakers, musicians, writers, choreographers, theatre and costume designers, composers, conductors, dancers, actors, directors, visual artists, arts administrators, managers and teachers.
