Founded in 1969 by Barbara Barrett, the Toronto School of Art (TSA) offers diploma and certificate programs in the area of fine arts and has approximately 900 students attend each year. Independent of government funding or subsidies, TSA sees itself as an 'alternative' to 'conventional post-secondary art programs' (www.tsa-art.ca).
TSA's Life Drawing Without Instruction is their longest running program, attracting artists from across the Greater Toronto Area.
Toronto School of Art features an Independent Studio Program which is an eight-month program designed for students who have completed a visual arts program or a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) degree. The purpose of the program is to provide students with the opportunity to develop their work, assisting them in the transition from formal training to private practice and/or for preparation for graduate studies. Students receive bi-weekly visits from their faculty member of choice, and a semi-private studio, with 24 hour access shared with approximately 5 other artists.
TSA’s directed full time six-month Portfolio Development Program/certificate is designed for individuals seeking entry into other institutions post-secondary programs such as animation, graphic (and) design, or other fine art programs offered across the country.
