Founded in 1760, Edinburgh College of Art (eca) is based in Edinburgh's Old Town and is one of the oldest and largest Schools of Art in Europe. The College has always been an independent institution, and is now officially recognised by the Scottish Government as a Small Specialist Institution for the teaching of art, design and architecture. The Edinburgh College of Arts degrees are validated and awarded by the University of Edinburgh.
The school consists of eight academic units, in fine arts, design, architecture and landscape architecture. Eca offers a diverse range of programs, including the MA (Hons) in Fine Art which has been running since 1945.
In 2005 the industry’s skills council Skillset endorsed Edinburgh College of Art in collaboration with Napier University, as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in screen education and training and a member of the UK-wide network of Screen Academies.
The Edinburgh School of Architecture, which combines researchers from the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art, leads Scotland in research in architecture and landscape architecture, according to the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), 2008. The percentage of staff research rated as ‘world class’ and ‘internationally excellent’ is 70% in Architecture and 45% in Art & Design.

The Research Assessment Exercise is conducted jointly by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and the Department for Employment and Learning, Northern Ireland (DEL).
