The Cardiff School of Art & Design (CSAD) is part of the University of Wales Institute which began in 1865 with the opening of The School of Art in the Old Free Library Building, St Mary’s Street, Cardiff. The university has four campuses, with the Cardiff School of Art & Design being located over two campuses at Howard Gardens and Llandaff Campus. The University of Wales Institute is also home to a National Assemby for Wales intiative called 'Design Wales' which was created to aid the development of design in Wales by providing advice to companies and businesses. There are at present nine design advisors covering design disciplines which include graphics, web design, product and engineering design, fashion & textile design and sustainable design. Much of CSAD’s Art and Design research is conducted through the Wales Institute for Research in Art and Design (WIRAD). In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise the Art & Design panel rated 95% of the research submission as international standard, with 70% rated as either Internationally Excellent or World Leading. Using Times Higher weightings this makes the submission 12th out of 70 in the UK and the best in Wales (http://www.csad.uwic.ac.uk).
