Established in 1841, the Newport School of Art, Media & Design is part of the University of Wales, Newport and was one the first art colleges in the UK to offer honours degrees in Fine Art and Graphic Design. Research is a fundamental component of the Newport School of Art, Media & Design and is a founding partner of the Wales Institute for Research in Art and Design (WIRAD). 'The University of Wales, Newport has rated highly in the National Student Survey 2006, coming top in Wales and fourth in the UK for overall satisfaction in  Assessment and Feedback to students. Art students placed Newport top in the UK for Learning Resources in all Creative Art & Design subjects. The University of Wales, Newport is home to one of the oldest film schools in the UK, the International Film School Wales (IFSW), who is a lead partner of the Skillset Screen Academy Wales. IFSW has been approved by the UK film industry as a centre for excellence and traning. 'Notable filmmakers who have graduated from IFSW include the award winning film maker Justin Kerrigan, director of ‘Human Traffic’. Film graduate Asif Kapadia scooped two BAFTA awards for his first feature film ‘The Warrior’.
